Karin Rugman BA(Hons), PGCE, FHEA.

 Registered: MTI, RSME, ESN, UKSMDT.

Karin is a qualified holistic massage therapist, bodyworker and somatic movement educator, running her own private practice Fit2Flow: Holistic Therapies in the local community. Karin has a BA(Hons) degree in Performing Arts, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, a Diploma in Shin Somatics®, a Diploma in Holistic Massage and more recently has qualified in oncology massage. She is a registered somatic movement educator/therapist with ISMETA (International Somatic Movement Education & Therapy Association), a registered practitioner in Holistic Massage with MTI (The Massage Training Institute), a registered somatic movement dance therapist with UKSMDT (the Association for Somatic Movement Dance Therapies, United Kingdom & The Republic of Ireland), a fellow of the HE Academy (FHEA) and a member of ESN (Eastwest Somatic Network). She is also a published writer and peer reviewer in the field of somatic movement investigation.

Karin originally trained in Shin Somatics ® and has additional skills in Alexander Technique, Ideokinesis, Feldenkrais Method and QiGong. She is an experienced somatic movement educator/therapist, with her work centring around the use of touch as a medium for health and well-being. She has a background in contemporary dance and has worked extensively in education and as a performer, choreographer and teacher in the local community for 30+ years. She worked at Bath Spa University as a part-time Senior Lecturer in Dance and Somatic Studies for over 27 years, where she established an advanced program of somatic studies in the Dance Department. Her courses introduced students to the foundations of somatic practice, promoting an understanding of kinaesthetic awareness in dance technique and performance, whilst investigating a deeper sense of self and wellbeing and exploring choreographic possibilities through somatic research. This work embedded body knowledge and self-regulation as a fundamental part of student practice, as well as encouraging a more confident and empowered body through self-knowing.

Over the years as a freelance practitioner, Karin has initiated and created numerous performance/creative projects within the local community, schools, colleges and theatre groups, as well as devising and performing her own dance works. Her community work now continues quietly in the background with more emphasis on facilitating somatic techniques as a tool for health and well-being.

More recently Karin taught on a two-year training programme in Somatic Dance Movement Therapy at Moving Soma, where she shared her experiences and expertise on somatic movement and the use of touch as a therapeutic tool. She has also been acting chair for ‘The Association for Somatic Movement Dance Therapies, United Kingdom & The Republic of Ireland'. Past projects include a collaboration with Untold Dance Theatre called the 'Confidence Project', a series of movement workshops that set out to support and build community and confidence within groups of women. Wider roles include teaching, choreographing & being external consultant for Kazdanz and Danzatak Somerset Youth Dance Companies, certification training for Eastwest Somatics Institute, link tutoring for the Commercial Dance Program at Weston College.
